Kindergarten and 1st Grade Lesson 2- Book Care
Learning Intention-
I know what a library is and how it works. This week we will focus on how I know and can demonstrate proper book care for books checked out from the library.
The purpose of this week's lesson is to introduce and then review basic book care concepts. At the end students should be familiar with what we should and should not do to take good care of library books. In general a library works by loaning materials to people who borrow something for a while and then return it. In order for a library to work successfully, borrowers have to take good care of what they borrow. If they don't, there won't be things to loan out in the future or those things will be torn, dirty, and not nice to use for anyone. The following illustrates the most important library rules. Please read and review them with your families.
2 Most Basic Rules of Library Book Check Out
1. Take REALLY GOOD care of your library book.
2. Bring it back!
2. Bring it back!

Specific BOOK CARE RULES
1. Keep your book in your backpack when you’re not reading it!
2. Always have clean hands when reading your book!
3. Do not eat or drink near your book! Please do not put water bottles, fruit, or any other food in your backpack because that could damage your library book.
4. Never write or draw in a book!
5. Keep your book away from your pets, especially dogs!
6. Little brothers and sisters don’t know book care rules! Please don’t let them have your book.
7. Use a flat bookmark to mark your place; this helps take care of the book’s spine.
8. Bring the book to the library for repairs! Send the book back to the library if it is accidentally damaged. Library staff will fix it with special library tools.
9. Please, don’t try to fix a torn page yourself!
10. Bring the book back when it’s due so you can check out a new one!
These book care rules apply for all books you check out from the library so that books remain clean and nice for all to use. If people don’t take good care of them, then the books will not be in good shape for the next person who would like to use and enjoy them.
Our story today illustrates what can happen when someone doesn't take good care of a book. In What Happened to Marion's Book?, we learn that while Marion loves books of all kinds and reads them all the time, she is surprised to learn that she doesn't take good care of them.
